An Enigma called GOD

Does god exist? If yes, who/what is he or (for political correctness) she? More importantly, why do we have to worship him? If god is in control, then what are we here for? Are we merely pawns in the hand of some puppet-master controlling the universe?

These are questions whose answers no person has been able to give me. People will state several instances of miracles performed, events which cannot be explained, and even the creation of the universe itself to prove the existence of god. These, I cannot personally accept or deny. There have been great men and women in history whom people have "idolized" (read Ram, Jesus and the like). I have nothing against these people for if the tales told about them are for real then they truly are great beings, whether human or ethereal is not for me to decide.

If we accept for a moment that god actually exists, the point still remains why do we worship the idols or pray to him in whatever manner the different religions choose to? If god is truly omnipresent and is in control of the situation everywhere, how would your prayer affect what many "learned" men say is pre-ordained? Why would god grant you that project if you are a businessman? Why would god give you more marks if you are in school? Why would god grant you whatever you have asked from him? The answer is he won't. You have to go out there and do it yourself. To those who say they gain a mental satisfaction, calmness and a sense of security from it, I say please continue. For others who seek returns, I think you are wasting your time and often your money as well.

Is god so conceited that you have to pray to him to get rewards for things which you do not deserve? And if you actually get those rewards, then that practically proves god is corrupt as well. Such a being is hardly someone who should be worshipped. I do not hold this opinion for I do not believe that god exists but am forced to infer the above on seeing the extravagant prayer ceremonies and rituals that are performed around me. Why do you require a priest to perform rituals? If you are so devout, won't your god listen to you? What are all the complicated ceremonies and verses for (referring purely to Hinduism)? Can't your god understand simple thoughts? It is baffling to see such large sections of society actually following these rituals. Hasn't it ever occurred to you that what is the point doing all this?

This blog is not so much about the existence of god as it is about all the lunacy associated with his worship. I sincerely hope, for the sake of millions of devotees that he exists, otherwise all their efforts will be in vain. As for me, I'll continue to rack my brains trying to figure out what exactly these people are trying to achieve.

I am with u(Siddhant) for such a thinking. Well people waste time, money and sometimes even relationships by considering the so-called GOD's presence.Well, words created like 'GOD-Generator Organizer Destroyer', doesn't really mean there is someone who does all these.Such words have been created just by some fellows who was mentally filled by GOD.
Though the belief of god creates some businesses like priests, astrology, etc., it has and is creating wars between different caste communities, mainly between Hindus and Muslims. People spend lots of time and money for building religious monuments like temples. Why can't those time and money be utilized for helping in the improvement of human living.
For those people who say they get anything by praying god, can u be alive in water for many (at least) days or by jumping off a cliff by just begging to god for your life. Impossible!

I bliv in god n I also bliv in all d rituals associated wth it.Coz I thnk all of d festivals r associated wth sum kind of pujas n rituals n it ws a real brainwave of our forefathrs, who startd all tis festivals so tht ppl hv a gt 2gthr n enjoy each othr company, bond wth each othr n hv a peaceful existence. On a lightr note,if u dont hv these festivals,4m where vl we hv all these holidayz 4 enjoyg life 2 d fullest.
As far as belief in god goes,I thnk one shud certainly bliv in god bt nt hv a blind faith on him.If u thnk we shudnt bliv in god thn i thnk we vl b walkg 2wards d end of d world as there wont b anyhthng tht vl prevent ppl doind wrong. There wont b anythng tht vl differentiate right 4m wrong.
And we arnt wastg money by celebratg n worshippg.Money spent there is certainly used 4 d common gud.It is certainly used 4 d upliftment of poor n downtrodden.
So,I jst thnk one bliv in god bt dont hv a blind faith on him.

i think that belief in god is a very personal thing....one need not show it...you can be a believer nd never go to a temple...its all in the mind...to use an oft repeated phrase...
i dont believe in rituals...nd all those elaborate poojas... nd casteism...nd the existense of thousands of GODs each of whom has to be individually appeased in the hindu system...nd keeping fasts to fulfill wishes...all this is fake....bt i do enjoy being with the family nd cousins during such poojas...
i do believe in GOD...in the sense that it gives me a feeling of assurance and security...
i think people who believe in GOD are actually looking for an abstract concept to explain things...like suddenly u got lucky...nd u wanna thank someone...its that someone who's GOD....or somebody hurt u...nd u console urself by saying that GOD is watching everything...that the day of judgement will come...blah blah blah..i thing that the concept of GOD is a neccesity...
i dont have blind faith..i believe in karma...doing ur part, discharging ur responsibilities faithfully and sincerely....

@ harshwardhan & sukanya

well i accept your views that festivals give us a chance to get together and rejoice with our families and friends, and have nothing against festivals as such. I enjoy them as much as anyone else....
but sukanya you have hit the nail on the head when you said "one need not show it". That is exactly the point i want to put across- 'THE UNDUE SHOW"

@harshwardhan
please tell me how the money spent in rituals is used for upliftment of the poor and downtrodden

their are temple trusts which uses d money we donate 4 social causes. And as we all know,we Indians spend a lot during festivals which most of the time land in d pockets of lower class. And their is d famous TRICKLE-DOWN effect in economics.

@ harshwardhan

Well, you are right about the money being collected in temples being used for social causes. And come to think of it you also have a point there when you say that the money eventually trickles down to the lower class. I never thought about that. Thanks for pointing it out.

However, I would personally stick to my belief that they(rituals) are a waste of time and (my) money. When I'm feeling generous I would rather donate it to an ngo or something rather than spend it in the manner you have described.
